Sardinia’s Secrets

The perfect motorcycle journey into the island of unspoilt nature and millenary traditions. By September big crowds and unbearable heat have left, opening it all up for us and our motorcycles to enjoy outright. Starting from the city of Cagliari, where the waiters are a good laugh and the food is to die for, we will embark in a loop all around the island, to experience the most beautiful and sometimes remote Sardinia. Everything is in the cards with this trip. From mountain roads immersed in fragrant Mediterranean vegetation, with granite rocks on one side and vast breathtaking views on the other, to coastal roads framed by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, we will experience and touch it all by hand. Expect awesome riding, dreamy swimming, great hotels, simple towns, warm hospitality, comedy, and even ghost mining towns. This island is vast and by western standards largely untouched, and we will dive right into its heart. Needless to say this journey will be a feast of amazing local foods like the suckling pig (often cooked buried underground) and the Pecorino cheese (Sardinian Pecorino is an assurance!)

The route

Starting in Cagliari, we will ride a loop all around the highland, exploring the most enjoyable and picturesque coastal and mountain routes.

DAY 1 (17/09) 40 km: WELCOME TO CAGLIARI

Airport pickup (Cagliari) - hotel check in - discover your chosen bike ready to go - trip briefing - panoramic warm up ride - dinner and sleep in Cagliari.

DAY 2 (18/09) 195 km: ROUTE TO GOLFO DI OROSEI

Immediately we’ll hit a must for motorcycle riders, the SS125 East, and continue along until the wild beach of Cea, where we’ll stop for a cooling swim and a great fish lunch. We’ll then head towards the Supramonte Mountains to cross over into wonderful sceneries of valleys and mountains, where we’ll stay for the night.

DAY 3 (19/09) 220 km: GENNARGENTU MOUNTAINS LOOP

This will be a glorious day of riding twisty mountain roads off the beaten tracks. We’ll make a looping route around the Barbagia region, the harsh and wild heart of this timeless Sardinia, passing by a number of remote towns like Orgosolo, once a refuge for outlaws and today known for its houses covered by large artful graffiti of local artists.

DAY 4 (20/09) 190 km: GOLFO DI OROSEI TO GALLURA

From the mountains we’ll head toward the coast and the picturesque Orosei, then to the white dunes and crystal clear waters of Capo Comino, where we’ll stop for lunch and the optional swim. Moving inland and towards the mountains again, we’ll ride into the heart of the Gallura region, passing vineyards and ancient forests populated by the centenary oaks famous for their bark, and finally getting off the saddle at a beautiful farmhouse hotel immersed in the green.

DAY 5 (21/09) 200 km: GALLURA TO BOSA

Crossing the northern side of the island to the west, we’ll head to one of the most beautiful beaches called Pelosa, where we’ll stop for lunch and an optional swim. We’ll then continue along the beautiful western coast to Alghero and then the panoramic all the way to Bosa.

DAY 6 (22/09) 190 km: BOSA TO COSTA VERDE

We’ll continue south to the quartz beaches of Is Arutas, then onto San Salvatore town resembling a Western movie set, Tharros’ archeological site, Oristano, and finally far from the tourist routes, we’ll discover the Costa Verde, where sand dunes alternate to old disused mining compounds.

DAY 7 (23/09) 230 km: COSTA VERDE TO CAGLIARI

Further south and up into the wild mountains we’ll enter the most important area for industrial archeology of Sardinia, once home to many proficient mines. From the mine ghost town of Ingurtosu located inland, then back to the Buggerru coast, Masua beach and Porto Flavia with the iconic ‘Pan di Zucchero’ (the highest sea rock of Europe), and then Nebida and the very suggestive Laveria Lamarmora, where women in the 1930s used to wash the mineral before they were sent off on the boats. Riding by the historical town of Tratalias, we’ll hit the unmissable panoramic coastal road all the way to Baia Chia and its charming beaches. Finally we’ll celebrate the end of an epic trip with a jolly dinner back in Cagliari where we’ll stay/party for our last night.
