The first version is from 1975, but the most iconic is the third version from 1981; black tank with chrome sides and red logo, gold rims, forks with boot gaiters. It represented a turning point: fast and extremely manoeuvrable on the road, but also defending itself well on (not too demanding) dirt roads. Compared to the standards of the time, it is particularly silent, vibrates and drinks very little. It does not suffer from oil leakage and is reliable. Impossible not to fall in love with it! The ignition is by kick starter, but following the correct procedure a gentle but firm blow is enough, in complete safety. The two-seater saddle is comfortable, even if a little short: it is more suitable for riders of average build. Thanks to the great attention to weight savings, such as motocross-specific forks and suspension, the XT500 is really smooth and sweet to handle. Both front and rear brakes are drum and work very well, plus the robust engine-brake is a very valid aid too. Thanks to the lightness and agility of the bike, the large single-cylinder seems much more powerful than the mere 32 HP it emits. The riding position is comfortable and well balanced, one just has to go enjoy the ride turn after turn, in complete confidence!
